For the past 6 month’s Director Joanne Barreto of Property 101 Group has been focused on ensuring the Multi-Unit Management industry lifts it’s game through desperately needed Education, Networking and Advocacy.  In March 2016 she was delighted to see this initiative come to fruition, announcing the NZ Chapter of Strata Community Association (previously Strata Community Australia) has been established.  Being the founding member and subsequently elected Chapter President, Joanne is excited about exciting developments in better regulation and implementing professional standards.

“SCA delivers codes of conduct, professional practice guidelines, education & training, industry advocacy as well as news bulletins to strata professionals in Australia, and it’s time body corporate managers, support staff, committee members and suppliers in the New Zealand sector had access to the same.”

“When you have no professional benchmark in a sector like strata property, things can go rogue pretty dramatically, and that’s exactly what we’ve observed in New Zealand.”

SCA is the peak body for the $1.2 trillion sector in Australia, while the New Zealand Sector is smaller, as you are well aware, the issues we face mirror those of Oz pre-SCA and through yesterday’s open forum, we were able to engage with industry leaders in taking a step forward towards raising the bar in NZ.

“Whilst we can’t claim that the Australian sector is perfect, we now have around 85% of Australian strata professionals voluntarily registered as members, making them responsible for upholding professional practices and codes of conduct, and that’s exactly the type of environment we want to see grow within the New Zealand sector.”

“Property assets are often the most important part of a person’s financial future, so it makes sense that the professionals who you rely on in this space are liable to respond to codes of conduct, professional practice – and ideally qualified.”

Members are represented from throughout New Zealand and the chapter executive have already made significant progress in terms of future events, education, training & tertiary qualifications.
